Candles have been used by people since the dawn of time for many different reasons. From the practical function of providing light, to the spiritual purpose of rituals and spell work, candles carry with them an innate beauty and mystery. They have the power to draw us into their flame, soothe us and open our eyes to the messages being sent our way.Candles hold many different meanings and functions. They are ceremonial, ritualistic, symbolic and utilitarian all at the same time. They can shine bright or glow dull. They can flicker or synchronize movement with other candles, and they can blow out suddenly for no apparent reason. The way that a candle burns can hold hidden significance about other worlds, the energetic of a room, the direction a ritual is going, the presence of otherworldly ancestors or any number of spiritual occurrences.

For thousands of years, candles have been employed for spiritual insight. As a conduit for fire, the candle represents illumination in the dark, for both the material world and the spirit realm. The open flame is an avenue for communication to other realms of existence, making it useful for carrying prayers, transmitting chants and asking questions. One would light a candle to accompany them on journeys through darkness and unknown territory. The candle also symbolizes consumptive power, elemental magic and transformation. It is the ideal tool to have for conducting spells and practicing magic, positive or negative.

Sympathetic magic has been an essential tool used in rituals and spells dating back to ancient times. It is the basis for most types of divination work. The key principle in sympathetic magic is the notion that ‘like produces like.’ Simply put, what is done to something will cause on outcome on something else. The earliest forms of sympathetic magic can be seen on cave drawings done during the Prehistoric period. When the men of the tribe were preparing for a hunt, the shaman would perform a ritual to ensure a successful hunt. He would draw images of the men finding and slaughtering animals with the intention of creating the desired outcome through his illustrations.

Related imageAlso known as Imitative magic, sympathetic magic uses spells cast on an object to directly affect a specific person. A ritual is performed on a candle, doll or other symbolic item with the purpose of transferring the energy to the intended recipient. Puppet healing and candle magic both follow the premise of this specific type of magic.

Candles can be used to formalize any ritual, celebration or meditation. By choosing particular colors you will be able to find a commitment to focus on a specific request, prayer, blessing, important aspect of your path, or for-Universal and Planetary Healing. You can give power and magical qualities to the flame, but the energies come from your consciousness.

Candle drippings viewed after a ceremony or meditation, will take shape and form and have meaning for you. They too are created out of the magic of your thoughts.

The power of the flame is neither male nor female but all and everything.

Candles and sacred flames are part of the myth and mystery of humanity’s experience in the physical, always a reminder of our connection to source. More than one color can be used in rituals. The candles should be anointed with appropriate scents and oils before ritual. Oil should be applied with both hands in a stroking motion. Candles represent the element of fire in rituals and are also used for concentration and focus. They attract Demons and spirits. Always make sure to check your candle as a test as you would with incense before beginning a ritual. Bad odors or burning the wrong way as with cheap incense can ruin a ritual. Candles are often used during religious and ritualistic ceremonies. A candle melts until its flame is extinguished in the physical … but a soul spark is immortal.

As we are all created by the flame of soul, therefore we all believe in magic at some level. Somewhere in our souls is the knowledge that there is more than physical reality. All is magic and illusion.

Many people associate ceremonies using candles with the occult, black magic, witchcraft, etc. Nothing is dark or negative unless it causes harm to someone or results in a negative reaction and most often originates from a dysfunctional soul.

You have to believe in the power of the candle if it is to work for you. Candle magic is usually part of a ritual but can be part of meditation or other exercises (see below).

There are many factors that play into the art of candle magic. Any type of magic that is performed is supposed to return to you three fold, whether it be positive or negative. Always keep the Wiccan Rede ‘An harm to none do what thou wilt’ in mind when considering your work. Always keep in mind that magic effect’s the entire world around you. Be very careful what you ask for, for it may well come true. The wording in any type of magic must not be taken lightly, be very careful, concise, and precise, make sure you have covered all possible bases.

Some candle magic has to be repeated over a period of days. Therefore, you will want to place them in an area that will not be disturbed. Do not choose a place where there is a TV, radio noise or disturbances of any kind. Keep in mind to not put candles near curtains and such, as you would not want to burn your house down. Candle magic should always be performed in a low traffic area. That is why a bedroom is really nice for such work.

The person casting the spell focuses his intent to influence the desired outcome signified by the candle.

Choosing the proper candle to use during a candle ritual is crucial to its success. As with voodoo dolls, the colors of the different candles represent specific intentions. The colors are also connected to the  zodiac. Take the following in mind when selecting your candle.

Red signifies courage, health, sexual love and lust. Red is the color of sex, love, power and vitality.  A red candle draws these qualities to you, and aids you in any spellwork that requires strong, fiery energy.  A red candle is often used in conjunction with black–burn the black candle first to banish negativity, then the red candle to draw in fresh energy.  (So-called “dual action” or “reversible” candles combine red and black into one candle.)

Zodiac sign – Taurus, Gemini, Leo and Capricorn

Burgundy – Half-way between the two colors, burgundy tempers the passion of red with the practicality of brown.  Use burgundy for magic related to determination, strength, and personal power.  Burgundy resonates with the blood, and helps in grounding and bringing your passions to fruition.

Pink signifies friendship and sweet love.Pink is the color of emotional well-being, sensuality, and matters of the heart.  Choose a pink candle when you wish to grow in compassion and self-love, or attract the love of others.  Forgiveness and reconciliation spells also call for gentle pink.

Purple signifies power, spirituality and meditation. The color of mystery and magic, purple is associated with psychic matters.  Use a purple candle for divination, astral travel, and to strengthen your connection with the unseen realms. Historically the color of royalty, purple is also suitable for magic related to wishes, ambition, power and authority.

Lavender – Lavender combines the innocence of white with the spirituality and passion of purple.  Lavender candles are used for spells of love, intimacy and friendship, as well as wishes of all kinds.

Yellow signifies protection, persuasion and attraction. Yellow is associated with the element of Air and the powers of the mind.  Burn a yellow candle for success in school or the arts, or to enhance communication in a relationship.  Yellow also increases focus and intuition.  Yellow is a great choice for business spells, especially when you need fresh ideas and inspiration.

Orange signifies encouragement, attraction and adaptability. The vibrant hue of orange evokes ambition and creativity.  Orange candles are well-suited for career workings, or any other time you need to assert your strength and individuality.

Gold signifies business endeavors and financial gain. Gold corresponds with the Sun, wealth, confidence, willpower, generosity and optimism.  A gold candle may be used to represent the God.  A grey or white candle may be substituted for silver, but there is really no substitute for the eye-catching gleam of gold!

Zodiac sign – Virgo and Sagittarius

Blue signifies depression, vulnerability, health, and patience. Blue helps you call upon the peace and patience of the element of Water.  Blue carries a gentle, but powerful energy.  Choose a blue candle for spells involving emotional healing, truth and justice.  A very spiritual color, blue can help awaken and heal the psychic mind.

Zodiac sign – Aquarius

Light Blue – The calming, cleansing energy of light blue is used for spells of healing, and also to dispel anger.  Light blue invokes the soothing qualities of the element of Water without its deeper, more dangerous properties. The color of unclouded daylight, light blue is also good for truth-seeking.

Green signifies financial gain, fertility, abundance, luck and employment.Traditionally the color of money magic, green symbolizes growth in every sense.  A green candle attracts abundance and earthly well-being.  Use for prosperity, health, and workings involving Nature. The color of purity and new beginnings.  Use a white candle for rituals involving healing, new beginnings, and spiritual growth.  Also appropriate for Lunar and Goddess workings.  Church candles are usually white, thus white candles are associated with prayer, remembrance, and devotion.  White may be substituted for any other color candle when that color is not available.

Zodiac sign – Pisces and Aries

Ivory – Similar in meaning to white, but with a tinge of earthy brown. Ivory is good for Full Moon workings, initiations, or any time you want an alternative to bright white.  Because it corresponds to precious things like ivory, pearl, and cream, this color is also used to attract luxury and abundance.

Brown signifies things related to the earth and/or animals. Brown is a strongly grounding, Earthy color. It aids in emotional stability, balance, and building trust. Some Witches also use brown for manifestation magic and connecting with the realm of animals.

Zodiac sign – Scorpio

Grey – Resting halfway between white and black, grey is the color of neutrality and balance.  A grey candle may be used in protective magic, when you wish to neutralize negative energy that may be directed at you.  Also used to gain discernment and wisdom.

Silver signifies intuition and lunar connections. Silver is associated with the Moon, psychic receptivity, dreaming, love, rest and healing.  On a Wiccan altar, a silver candle is often used to represent the Goddess.

Image result for way the candles burn fantasy artThe way a candle burns has everything to do with what is happening around us. Invisible energy, much like the air, vibrations, or magnetic forces, influence the events that happen around us. If we pay close enough attention, our interpretations can help us decide what to do next or where to go from here.

Upon initiating magic, conducting a spell, praying or asking a question, there are subtleties to look for as the candle relays a deeper spiritual significance. Pay attention to smoke, sounds, the movement and strength of the flame and the quickness or slowness of the burn.

How your candle burns holds deep significance. Things like the strength of the flame, the direction in which it tilts and the color of smoke that the candle gives off are all clues to the spiritual insights they hold.

Another powerful way to gain observations from your candle is to study how the wax burns. The art of reading a candle’s melted and hardened wax is called Ceromancy. Ceromancy is one of the most ancient types of divination. Wax drippings provide hints into how effectively your magic is working and if your messages are being blocked or thwarted.

A Clean, Steady and Strong Burn –This generally means a green light, for your intent is clear and you prayer or spell has been successfully sent. Especially if the candle is burning in glass and there is no wax residue, scorching or blackening where the flame is, then there is a good chance your intentions will work in your favor and you will receive your answer or wish quickly.

A healthy flame –  has a bright red core, surrounded by a blue halo and then a yellow color. A blazing red center tells you that spirits are getting to the heart of the matter. A red center that is dim or just a pinpoint reveals a situation that may not be motivated by the heart. If the wick of the candle starts building a little bulb at its tip, chances are that you have opposition or a third party working against you. If there is a lot of blue in the flame, I take that as a sign that angels and spirits are protecting you from a possibly unhappy outcome.

Weak or Low Flame- This is a sign that you have not accumulated sufficient power to accomplish your desired goal or that another is working against you. Watch the flame to see if it grows stronger as it burns, if not, this means that your desire may not manifest and if it does it will take a long time. When this occurs you should re-evaluate your goal or continue burning candles until you see improvement.

Image result for way the candles burn fantasy artStrong or High Flame- A strong flame indicated a great amount of power or energy is being spent to achieve your goal. A flame which burns abnormally high is indicative that God has heard your petition and this is generally taken as a sign that your work will succeed.

Flame Goes Out– A candle that will not burn or whose flame goes out is trying to tell you that there are strong energies working against you. When this occurs you have three choices. They are 1) Dispose of this candle and start over with another. 2) Re-light the candle and refortify it with fervent prayer. or 3) Dispose of the candle and re-evaluate your goal.

Flame Relights Itself- A candle whose flame appears to become extinguished and which then begins burning again is a sign that there are energies opposing your work but that your candle is fighting back to keep working for you.

Flaring Flame- When the flame flares up and down this is a sign of opposition and that you are in an active struggle with the subject of your spell. It could be that someone is working against you or that someone is working for the same goal as you (i.e. casting spells for the same promotion, lover, etc…) Pay attention to how the candle continues to burn for additional signs.

Clear flame – A pure, even tempered relationship.

Blue flame – A spiritual or emotional storms ahead. A lot of blue in the flame angels and spirits are protecting you from a possibly unhappy outcome.

Rainbow flame – Represents mixed communications and change, the message depends on the color. The color can correspond with aura color.

Bright flame – A healthy, passion filled relationship.

Red fame – A red center hints that spirits are getting to the heart of the matter. A red center that is dim or just a pinpoint reveals a situation that may not be motivated by the heart. If the wick of the candle starts building a little bulb at its tip, chances are that you have opposition, or a third party working against you.

Doesn’t burn – The situation won’t work, or will take a lot of effort due to lack of passion and interest. A lot of negativity is in the environment, do a cleansing to remove before proceeding. If it is to remove harm another spell must be done.

The Candle Flickers – When the Candle Flame flickers ,this significant the present of spirits.

Crackling Flame-  A candle which snaps, crackles, or pops  is generally believed to be a sign of the language of spirits (ancestors, angels, etc…). It is believed that the spirits are either talking to you or to each other.

Related imageFast Burn- A candle which burns down quickly and leaves little to no residue is given as a sign that the work will be successful but that perhaps the results will not be lasting.

Slow Burn- A candle which burns down slowly, or slower than other candles of the same type previously burned is given to indicate that 1) the goal of the spell will take some time but that the results will last or 2) there is resistance to your spell.

A Slow, Weak Burn – This could point to a weakly conducted spell, prayer or general intention. Focus your energy, and perhaps fine-tune and direct your intention with time and effort. If the flame grows larger, it means your intentions are gaining power.

Hissing, Sizzling, Crackling or Popping – Listen closely! The one whom the message is directed is responding. A spirit or ancestor may be trying to work with you. The louder the sounds become, the stronger the will to communicate with you.

An Unsteady, Jumping, Sputtering or Flickering Flame – As long as there is no draft in the air, there may be resistance against you. Try putting more willpower and energy behind your intention. If you are directing a spell toward somebody, they could be picking up on it and working against it, consciously or not. The higher the jumping flame, the more resistance there is.

Flame pointing North: Something physical is manifesting. This can be of long duration.

A Flame Pointing South: Something is happening that is aggressive in nature, a steamy, hot situation.

The Smoke of a candle: The following general rules apply when interpreting the direction your candle smoke takes:

East: Success comes with thought and strategy. Carefully review the situation. Patience is the key here.
South: Success comes rapidly with your request. In the case of health, your recovery is immanent.
West: When the smoke wafts to the West, the issue is too emotional. Step back, You are too involved. Look at the situation from a detached point of view to clear the mind. Then, reanalyze the problem. Is there something you are overlooking?
The Talking Candle –  Candle chatter denotes communication on some level. That level will depend on the magick you are performing. Chatter is most common when using figure candles and can denote who is getting told what and by whom.
Soft, infrequent Chatter: Indicates intimate conversation and, at times, pure thoughts.
Mild, Frequent Chatter: Someone in a position of authority is giving orders or directions.
Strong, Frequent Chatter: Denote Arguments, quarrels or loud disagreements.
Remember, the language of the candle is important. The direction of the flame, the wafting of the smoke, and the audible chatter are all a from of communication for divination into past, current, and future events. Take notes and learn the language of the candle so you can better understand the workings of your magick. Whenever you are looking for omens in candle language, always use your common sense. Remember that each magickal act is different and reach candle is unique. Combine this awareness with your subconscious interpretations of the omens and you will find that your interpretations will vary from those of others under similar circumstances. Experiment to find out what is right for you.

Puffs of White Smoke – Blessings upon you! A good sign indeed, as it indicates that your intentions were heard and will be granted.

Image result for way the candles burn fantasy artPuffs of Black Smoke – There is something or somebody in the way and perhaps working against you. Negative energies might be being fought or purged.

Flame/ smoke leans toward you – The concern will be resolved in your favor. If smoke wafts towards you it means that your prayer is more than likely to be answered, and answered quickly.

Flame/ smoke leans away from you – The concern will not be resolved in your favor unless you use your head. If smoke wafts away from you, then it means that you will need a great deal of perseverance and patience in order to have your prayer answered.

Transient images – Images that occur while the candle is burning, but disappear by the time the candle flame has gone out. The shape will give clues to the situation’s outcome. A run of wax droplets down the side of the candle are called “tears”, and they denote that someone will cry before the spell succeeds. Smoke residue can also be read, and are direct messages from your spirits.

The smoke wafts away from you – perseverance will be needed to achieve your desire.

Vanishing Flame – Either your intent is insufficient or the spirit in question may disagree with your motives. Sharpen your intent, rephrase your prayer, question or plea and try again.

Relighting Flame – Your intentions are still being considered by your spirits. There is still work to be done. Keep focusing.

The Candle Doesn’t Burn At All – Cleansing must be done before continuing. Smudge yourself and the room you are focusing in with purification herbs, like white sage or mugwort, to cleanse yourself of negative energies.

Burning Only On One Side – Expect only a partial response or an incomplete spell to happen. This could leave things unresolved or unsettled in daily matters. The type of candle could have been the culprit. Refocus your intention, find a better candle and try the process again for better results.

Burning With Multiple Flames – Two or more flames on a single candle could indicate that someone is either working alongside you or against you. Depending on your intentions, it could mean either unity or separation.

Infrequent noise – Mild, pure thoughts, intimate conversation indicated.

Mild frequent noise – Indication of an authority type figure giving orders, can be presences with this one.

Clean, no signs, even burn – Success despite opposition especially if no marks on the glass unless it is a free-standing candle then no residue and even burn is good. It can also mean the candle is mute, doing nothing.

Image result for way the candles burn fantasy artThe Candle Explodes and/or Catches Something On Fire – Be very careful! Either someone is attacking you or the person you are attacking is protected from harm and the spell has been reflected back at you.

Clean Burn- It is given as a good sign that what you wish for will come to pass with little to no resistance if a Vigil Light burns without leaving behind any wax residue or marks on the glass.

Soot on Top-  If the top portion of a Vigil Light is blackened from soot, but otherwise clean as it burns down, this is given as a sign that your spell got off to a bad start (i.e. it initially faced some negativity or opposition) but that it worked past those negative energy and worked well for you.

Soot on Bottom- If a Vigil Light burns clean in the beginning but later leaves a black soot on the bottom portion of your candle, this is a sign that your spell got off to a good start but ran into opposition before completing its work for you. When this occurs you should back up the work by lighting another candle and continuing to do so until you get a candle that burns clean.

Soot All Over- A Vigil Light that burns completely black is a definite sign that a strong enemy is working against you.

Candle relights after being put out – The spirits are detecting something that is good or bad, and need the candle to assist effectively.  If a candle is put out that is being used to dominate or harm someone the spirits of that individual have time to retaliate.

The entire top of candle and wick is on fire – The spell is being fought by a spirit, but more than likely the spell will be successful.

Candle unfolds or deconstructs –The way a candle unfolds or deconstructs as it melts can be very significant. If it seems to collapse outward or unfold like a flower it is a sign that your wish will be granted. It represents possibilities and paths opening for you. A candle that is too lopsided in one direction or another means that you are dealing with a situation that is way out of balance. If the flame is buried by the wax, that is often a sign that the wish will not be granted.  A candle burns on one side, it was only part way effective. It means the wrong candle or wrong candle dressing was used.

Burn marks on the glass –  Where the flame burns the label with the Saint (Santo) can indicate that there is a nemesis or free enemies that are stabbing you in the back and/or casting you the evil eye.

Cracked Glass/Explodes- As in the case with many of the signs mentioned, the signs given for a Vigil Light that cracks or explodes largely depends on the the goal of the spell. Generally speaking a cracked/exploding Vigil Light can indicate 1) Breaking through an obstacle such as another person’s defenses 2) Breaking a spell such as a hex that was placed on you or 3) Your candle broke because it took a ‘hit’ for you or 4) The person is actively working against you and broke your spell before it could have an affect on him or her.

The Glass remain Clear – your prayer will be granted despite any opposition.

The glass turns black at the top but clears towards bottom – Someone is working again you with the darker, the blackening, the stronger the opposition you are facing he suggest you are thinking positive and persevere.

The glass turns entirely black – Serious obstacle stand in your way and more work, including  uncrossing and negativity removing need to be done by a practitioner of your faith.Image result for way the candles burn fantasy art

How your candle burns holds deep significance. Things like the strength of the flame, the direction in which it tilts and the color of smoke that the candle gives off are all clues to the spiritual insights they hold.

Wax on glass – When a candle leaves waxy residue it indicates that there are still some things that need to be straightened out in order to obtain your desires completely. This can be cleared with repeated candle work and some interpretation of the symbols in the residue. If there is a good amount of wax remaining in the bottom of the glass, there is some unfinished business. You may need to burn a second candle or follow it up with another spell. Wax on the sides of the glass indicates where there are personal hindrances to the progress of the spell. Waxy residue is an indication of personal or emotional blocks. The candle can be divided in to chakras to pinpoint the problem. The right and left sides of the candle labeled as projective and receptive. The front of the candle and back labeled as past and future or in some cases, conscious and subconscious. Then work to clear those areas with spiritual cleansing and candle work. Droplets of wax running down the candle side this can signify tears and an indication of difficulties. Also that there may be a period of suffering before the desire is granted.

The way that a candle deconstructs as it melts can be extremely significant. Uncovering the hidden meanings of your candles wax can be done in two ways. The first is to examine and interpret the natural forms left after your candle has burned. The way the wax pools when the candle burns down, the way it drips on the sides of the candle, or if the wax “drowns” the wick all have meaning. During the burning process, the wax melts and forms images. Transient images are the forms that the wax takes as it is melting. These images can appear as droplets or “tears.” If the tears melt and disappear by the time the candle is finished burning, it is believed that any sorrow you carry will pass quickly. If the tears harden and remain on the sides of the candle, you may be burdened with your sorrows for a long time to come before you achieve your desired goal. The shapes taken on by the solidifying wax are called persistent images. After a candle burns, the puddle that is left should be observed for any significance to the spell it was used with.

When you are burning an encased candle, the waxy residue left behind can offer you clues. If there is a lot of wax remaining at the bottom of the glass after the candle has burned, there may be some unfinished business left for you to explore and address. A second ritual may need to be conducted to fully resolve any lingering issues. Wax left on the sides of the glass could mean that you are subconsciously blocking yourself from achieving your desires.

Look for any black soot left behind after your glass candle has burned. If the soot is mainly at the top half of your candle, the obstacle you were trying to overcome has been unblocked. Soot appearing the entire length of the candle or at the bottom of the candle should be taken as a warning that there is negative energy that is blocking your path. You may want to consider performing an uncrossing ritual to counter the negativity.

Any white soot left on the glass is a positive message from the spirits. It is a method of spiritual communication letting you know that your request has been received and your prayers have been heard.

Related imageAnother way to observe and identify the messages from the candle’s wax is by tipping the candle over a shallow bowl of water and letting some of the wax pour into the water. When you drip candle wax in water, it hardens and forms images. These images can be decoded and clarified, similar to the art of reading tea leaves.

To perform this candle drip divination, fill a glass bowl with a few inches of water. Gather some 9″ Jumbo Candles, in various colors. Light a candle that corresponds to your question – for example, green represents success and abundance. Hold the candle upright over the water for a moment, focusing on your question. When the flame is fully burning and the wax has begun dripping, tilt the candle about an inch away from the water’s surface.

Allow the wax to drip onto the water. The tiny drops should merge together into shapes. If they do not, you must focus harder on your question. After a minute or two, a definitive shape will appear on the water. As it hardens, snuff out your candle. Look at the shape. Study it to see what it looks like and touch it to see if you receive any messages from the wax.

Do your best to be confident in your findings. Try not to dismiss them as implausible or ridiculous. Remember that images can mean different things to different people. A star may be a happy image representing freedom and faith, or it can be a sad image representing loss. What you see in your wax drippings is a very personal thing and should not be influenced by anyone but you.

There are many resources, including online sources and books, that can help provide meaning into the images that you see during your candle reading. It is important to remember that the most important interpretation comes from within you. Trust in your instincts and tap into what a particular image means most to you.

Any white soot left on the glass is a positive message from the spirits. It is a method of spiritual communication letting you know that your request has been received and your prayers have been heard.

Image result for way the candles burn fantasy artOf course, not every single thing the candle does is a sign. Variable factors such as a draft or even the way the candle was made will affect how it will burn. Also, every person may inspire a different meaning from each burn, so approach this ritual with a clear, open mind and proceed accordingly. Sometimes a candle will melt down and drip wax in puddles as it burns. These puddles are often searched for signs and symbols which will give an indication of the success or failure of the work. Some common symbols include Hearts, Faces, Tears, Eyes, Circles, Genitals, Some individuals have attempted to assign specific meanings to commonly occurring symbols which have often found in these drippings. However,  I feel that although there are universal meanings to some such symbols, but that they are also very subjective. For example, it has been said that wax which forms droplets down the side of a candle are called tears and that they represent that someone will cry before the spell is complete. This is usually interpreted as tears of sorrow, regret, or grief. However, tears can also be interpreted as joy and happiness. For this reason I will not presume to tell the reader what a certain symbol means, but rather would instruct him or her to define for themselves what a symbol represents.
The petition can be wrapped up with left-over candle wax, herbs, etc.. and buried 1) near your front door to attract influences 2) in your backyard to maintain conditions 3) tossed in running water to move something away from you or 4) at a crossroads to disperse energy.Image result for way the candles burn fantasy art

If the petition was part of a working to hurt or jinx an enemy it can be burned and the ashes mixed with any left over wax, or any type of crossing herbs or powder and 1)buried in the individuals front yard 2) buried under their doorstep 3) hidden in a tree on their property (usually on the western side), 4) hidden in their car 5) buried where they are sure to step over it, etc….

Above all, select a color that draws you to it whenever you meditate on your desired goals. Generally white can be used in place of any other color. Visualize and see the color(s) of your candle based on the list below.

 Ritual Use of Candles

Candles are traditionally placed, one in each of the four directions of east, south, west, and north, at the perimeter of the space where your circle will be cast, and represent the four basic elements. These can be in the elemental colors or in white, and they are referred to as ‘point candles.’ Additionally, there should be two more candles on your altar-one for the Goddess and one for the God. Aside from this, candles of various colors can be used in spells. They should be consecrated, smudged and blessed through the elements before use so that any residual energy from their manufacture and storage can be removed, leaving them clean and ready for your magical purpose.

We are burning candles for: Prayer work, Manifesting, Healing, Asking for assistance for angels, saints etc., Conquering addictions, fear, worry, etc. Meditation, removing negativity in the home and around the person, protection, during intuitive work.

We can keep a white candle lit when using any other candle and keep it to the left of the collared candle.

Related imageWe should: Never blow out candles – always snuff them out. Use only wooden matches to light candles and incense. Always allow white candles to burn completely down. Protection candles or ones to remove negative energy should not be burned completely down.  Only until it reaches ½ inch left of the candle.  The candles with this purpose consume the negative energy.  When the candle is finished then throw it out so that no one would be able to touch it.  Make sure you always burn a white candle with any protection candles.

Lighting and Extinguishing  – Many individuals light their candles with ordinary matches, while others feel that the sulfur with which matches are tipped, disturb the nature of the work. These people light a small candle in another room, which they use to light their spell candles with, at the appropriate time. The effectiveness of your candle spell will be greatly enhanced by focused intent and chanting during its preparation and burning, as will having a clear vision of your goal
Extinguishing candles is another issue where magical practitioners are divided. Methods of extinguishing candle include:

Pinching out the flame, but some say you pinch out your wish.

Blowing out the flame, but some say you blow away your wish.

Snuffing out the flame, but some say you snuff out your wish.

Just like lighting your candles, you will either have to experiment or trust your instincts when choosing how to extinguish your candles. Whichever methods you choose, it is important that you remain consistent.

A trio of candles cutting through the darknessLighting, Extinguishing and Disposal

Light all candles with a lighter or another candle. Never use matches, as the Sulphur will disrupt magical workings.

By cleansing a candle, you are removing all negative or psychic energies that the candle might have picked up along the way. It’s like resetting the candle to its original state.

There are four ways to cleanse a candle:

Hold the candle over incense or sage smoke.

Leave it outside overnight in the moonlight.

Bury the candle in sea salt and leave overnight or one full day.

Rub alcohol on it, starting at the bottom, working your way to the top. If you are working with a candle in glass, then rub alcohol on the exposed areas and glass.

Marking a candle means to inscribe something in its wax. Candles are marked with two pieces of information, they are: Who the candle spell is to affect and the goal of the spell.

Related imageThe name of the individual can be written in your native language or in a magical alphabet. Your goal may be written in the form of a keyword or phrase, or a magic symbol such as a Rune, Astrological Sign, or even a magical symbol of your own making. In either case, the candle is marked vertically from the top of the candle to the bottom, with the name of the individual on its ‘face’ and the goal on the reverse.
To anoint a candle, hold its base against your abdomen (as if to insert it in your belly button). To draw something to you, dip your finger in the oil and stroke the candle from the tip to base three times and call the essence of your desire, using a keyword of phrase. To drive something away from you, anoint the candle from base to tip.
Herbs represent another aspect of dressing candles, which brings an added dimension to the process. After dressing the candle with oil, it may be rolled in a mixture or a combination of an odd number of herbs from 10 to 13 and never more than 13. Herbs chosen for dressing the candle should match your goal. No matter what cleansing method you choose, it is very important to always focus on your goal while cleansing. Pray and ask for blessings and cleansing of the candle.

Dressing is a process in which you anoint a candle with  oils. When you dress a candle, you are imprinting your intentions onto it. This makes your spells more powerful and effective.Dressing a candle refers to the act of anointing the candle with oil. Candles are anointed with oil to spiritually cleanse them and seal the magick inside until releasing it through the act of burning the candle. Candles are anointed in two ways, either to draw things towards yourself, or drive them away.Image result for dressing the candles with positive energy fantasy art

Charging the Candles – Now that your candle is prepared, it must then be charged. To ‘charge’ a candle means to fill it with energy, much like charging a battery. Charging a candle fills it with power that it will release into the universe as it burns in order to accomplish your goal.

To charge your candle, hold your hands over it and form a triangle with your forefinger and thumbs. Position the candle in the center of your triangle. Visualize that which you desire as your make your fervent prayer or petition. When you are done, gently tap the candle on the table three times to signal that your intention is sealed.

Despite the various conflicting methods on how to dress a candle, you can’t do it wrong if you set your intentions right!

Some like to rub oil in the middle of the candle and then proceed to rub downward, from the middle of the candle to the bottom. Some rub from the middle to the top.

If you are doing a spell that is bringing you something, rub oil from the top of the candle, downward to the bottom. If you are doing a spell that is getting rid of something, rub oil from the bottom upward to the top. Always stroke the candle in the same direction.

Whichever direction you choose to anoint your candle, make sure you focus on your goal and visualize it while you are dressing your candle. For example, if your goal is to draw in more money, visualize yourself gaining prosperity as you rub the candle.

You may also use  herbs, cut or in powder form, in your oils.

Related imageCertain oils and herb combination help produce different outcomes.  Cinnamon Oil, Clove Oil and Attraction Oil are best for love spells, All Spice Oil and Better Business Oil are good for money spells, and Rosemary Oil and Dragon’s Blood Oil are best for breaking a hex or crossed condition. There are many more oils and herbs that correspond to your spell and desires.

After cleansing and anointing your candle, you may want to carve symbols, letters, drawings or words right onto the candle. You can carve your name or the names of loved ones or symbols like a dollar sign or a heart. If the spell is for a specific event, carve the date onto the candle. This not only helps you focus on your desired outcome but it also sends the intention out to the universe. You can use a straight pin or knife to carve or have it pre-carved with your inscription.

In addition to carving, you can also write out a petition on a paper and place it under the candle or candleholder. If you are burning a candle for someone, placing a picture of him or her under the candle can help with your desired result.

A popular last step is sprinkling your candle and/or casting a magic circle around your candle. This can be done with  sachet and sprinkling powders like Cascarilla. Simply pick a powder that works with your desired spell and sprinkle it on your candle. Creating a circle around the candle acts as protection to you.

As you can see, there are many ways to prepare your candle. You can’t go wrong if your intentions are pure and you speak from the heart!

To extinguish a candle, use a candle snuffer, or wave your hand over the top of the candle to create enough draft to extinguish it.

If you plan to use it again, store it carefully. If the spell calls for a virgin candle, bury it off of your property for spells involving the movement of things away from you and on the property if you wish to draw something toward you.

Keep candle drippings from all rituals, except those where you are repelling. You can add drippings to healing pouches (if the spell was for healing). Re melt them on a talisman consecrated and empowered during the same ritual, or keep them simply in the bottom of a purse or coat pocket for good luck, fertility, romance and fortune.
The flame represents the source of our creation, your inner light.

Your Altar:
You may use anything that has a flat top. Be creative. Cover the altar if you prefer. Although some magic specifies a color then whatever color is specified should be used. Again, be creative. Keep in mind that candle magic is usually done in condensed areas so keep things as simplistic as you can, especially your candlesticks and crystals.

Incense: Incense is part of the process. The type / types that you use may be specified in a specific spell, if that is the cases by all means use that. Research on incense fragrances and their effects is need here. Incense symbolizes Air, as the smoke rises our thoughts are carried up into the universe.

It speaks to us of the soul spark that is above and below, within and without, that which links us all together originating from the same source of thought consciousness.

You can give power and magical qualities to the flame, but the energies come from your consciousness.

Candle drippings viewed after a ceremony or meditation will take shape and form and have meaning for you. They too are created out of the magic of your thoughts.

The power of the flame is neither male nor female but all and everything.

Candles and sacred flames are part of the myth and mystery of humanity’s experience in the physical, always a reminder of our connection to source.

Nothing is dark or negative unless it causes harm to someone or results in a negative reaction and most often originates from a dysfunctional soul.

image3When candles are molded into shapes, it is called sympathetic magic.

To assist in finding a familiar, burn a candle in the shape of the animal you desire

Fertility spells can be cast with a phallus-shaped candle. Healing uses human-shaped candles or skull candles. White ones are for healing, black ones for reversing spells and warding off negativity.

Another type of candle magic uses pins. Stick a pin in as close to the top as you can without breaking the wax.

As you insert it, say: When this candle burns to the pin, the process of (name the desire) will begin.

Insert a second pin close to the first and say: When this candles burns to this pin

The process of (name the desire) will come to a successful completion and end.

You can use birthday candles or very small candles for a spell that needs to be done quickly. You can also put drops of colored oil or food coloring into small tea lite candles which also burn quickly.

Candle gazing is a gentle and loving form of meditation. Combined with your favorite incense, Moon cycle, music or stones, Candle Gazing can be an important technique for grounding, channeling or just to relax and Be At Peace. In a quiet, darkened room, light your candle or candles of choice. Breathe deeply, ground and center, and gaze quietly at your candle flame. Let yourself feel warmed by the Light. Let the candleØs peaceful radiance fill you completely. As thoughts surface in your mind and Heart, experience them as if they came from within you, radiating outward. Do not let the flame split into a double image-keep your eyes and attention focused but relaxed. Remain doing this for at least five to ten minutes and for longer with practice.

Candle Magic has been around since the dawn of time, traced as far back as the Paleolithic era. It is a very powerful form of sympathetic magic.

You have to believe in the power of the candle if it is to work for you. Candle magic is usually part of a ritual but can be part of meditation or other exercises.

Find a quiet place, free of disturbances, people, phones, pets, fans, air conditioners that might disturb the flame.

You may use soft background music.

image11Some people enjoy using incense.

Make clothing comfortable, remove eyeglasses or contacts.

Make the room dark, the only light being the flame of a candle used. I prefer spiral candles or large thick candles that last for hours.

Sit in a relatively comfortable chair with the candle approximately an arm’s length distance in front of you, perhaps at a kitchen table.

You could also place the candle on a coffee table then sit on the floor, as many people are comfortable in the lotus position.

This can be a method of self-hypnosis. In this case send you a message that you are to return to consciousness after your messages / messages have been given.

You can state your intention before you begin focusing on the flame of the candle, such as, “I want to see myself in a past life that links to this one.”

Now gaze at the flame. Look at the flame. Breathe deeply and evenly, in through the nose and slowly out through your mouth.

As you look at the flame, you can see that it is actually made of the colors of the rainbow. Subtle shades of red glow at the very tip of the flame. Your passion, your physical body is being left behind, as a faint reminder of who you are.

image7The orange that follows spans a short time on the flame. Your anchor on this earth, also reminds you that there is a life on this plane.

Then, the yellow, the most prevalent, the most powerful part of the flame draws your attention. It burns as your creativity, yearning to burst free and shower you with its inspirations.

Your eyes follow down and see the tiny segment of green, your center, your growth. This is where the bountiful harvest of your life lies.

Feel the growth and abundance everywhere in the universe before you fall into the blue at the base of the flame. The blue, the higher emotion of your secret self-burns brightly if only you look at it.

Below it, barely perceptible, is the violet of your spirit. This is the same spirit that resides within you, but it is barely perceptible day to day. You must catch it unawares to know it. As you watch your flame/spirit, Let the violet flame enlarge and envelop the blue, green, yellow, orange and red of the fire. Let your spirit enlarge to fill you in the same way.

As you inhale, feel your spirit fill you with the light of the candle.

Breathe the flame. Become one with it and the essence of the source of creation.

Close your eyes. Breathe your spirit. Find your Light. Visualize your descent down a long and beautiful spiral staircase and when you reach the bottom of the staircase you will see three doors. [Remember that consciousness spirals into reality. Three=manifestation in the physical].

image10

Choose a door. Wait patiently for your subconscious mind to open it.

When you go through the door, relax your mind. Patiently watch your inner screen, in front of your forehead (third eye chakra) for images.

You may see colors or shapes, people or places. You may hear tones.

Often images will drift into your awareness which may not make sense to you at first. These are your archetypes for awakening / remembering your mission, who you are, why you are here.

If nothing appears to you when you first do this exercise, you will benefit from experiencing the meditative state and your mind will become conditioned for self-hypnosis and past life regression.

After receiving your messages, you may enter the other doors or return upstairs.

These messages should be recorded when you are finished, as they will make sense later on.

You may want to draw what you see or create a short story about it.

When doing any ritual one must know the exact thing that is wanted. I repeat the exact wish must be stated very clearly.

Let’s do an example of a love ritual. The exact type of love must be stated.

If the performer wants a very binding and lasting love of one person then a blue Sapphire and a green candle should be used.

If a young warm love is wanted a Rose Quartz and a red candle is used.

A deeply passionate love will need a Garnet and orange candle to be effective.

To bind the love of a family together a Carnelian and a pink candle will be used.

The love of God or a spiritual love will need an Amethyst and a pink candle.

For a romance with someone from a past life use a Turquoise and a black candle.

If marriage is the aim use an Emerald and a white candle. To perform this candle drip divination, fill a glass bowl with a few inches of water. Gather some 9″ Jumbo Candles, in various colors. Light a candle that corresponds to your question – for example, green represents success and abundance. Hold the candle upright over the water for a moment, focusing on your question. When the flame is fully burning and the wax has begun dripping, tilt the candle about an inch away from the water’s surface.Another way to observe and identify the messages from the candle’s wax is by tipping the candle over a shallow bowl of water and letting some of the wax pour into the water. When you drip candle wax in water, it hardens and forms images. These images can be decoded and clarified, similar to the art of reading tea leaves.Another way to observe and identify the messages from the candle’s wax is by tipping the candle over a shallow bowl of water and letting some of the wax pour into the water. When you drip candle wax in water, it hardens and forms images. These images can be decoded and clarified, similar to the art of reading tea leaves.

Image result for candle wax to drip onto the water fantasy artAllow the wax to drip onto the water.

For example, if you have conducted a love-drawing spell and incorporated a Love Affirmations Pillar Candle into your ritual, a heart-shaped wax puddle is a good sign. If you are burning an Abundance/Shango candle as part of a money-drawing ritual and the wax spills over onto your altar and dries on your monetary offering, the spell is working and the money has been blessed.

Image result for different shape of candlesThere are:

  1. Specialty Candles
  2. Figure Candles

Specialty Candles – Specialty candles differ from other types of candles mentioned in that they meet one or more of the following conditions. 1. They come in a size different from votive, taper, or pillar candles. 2. They consist of one candle molded in two or more colors of wax. Examples of specialty candles include Jumbo Candles, Double Action Candles and Reversing Candles.

Jumbo Candles are nine inches long and come in either a single color, two colors, or sometimes three colors. Due to their size and width they are usually used in seven-day type spells. They are used just like regular candles as described before.

Double Action Candles are candles which have been made from two different colors of wax. They are usually red, white, or green on their top half and black on their bottom half. They are believed to simultaneously reverse negativity while drawing in positive influences as represented by the color of candle used. In addition to carving names on these candles and anointing them with oils, they are usually ‘flipped’ by cutting off the wick turning it upside down and digging a new wick out of what was the bottom. In this way the evil as represented by the black portion of the candle burns away so that the good as represented by the other color can draw in the positive influences.

Reversing Candles are jumbo candles which consist of a red candle covered with a layer of black wax and are used to reverse negativity back to its source. They are often employed in the same manner as double-action candles by flipping the candle, marking it with the enemy’s name (usually backwards), anointing it with a condition oil and burning it on a mirror. As the candle burns the red wax will overcome the black wax and run down the candle symbolically overcoming the evil.
Related imageFigure Candles  – Figure candles are candles which have been created in various forms and which represent certain conditions, ideas, or people. They come in a wide variety of choices and colors from which a practitioner can choose when deciding to perform spells. Examples of Figure Candles include, Human-Figure Candles, Cat-Candles, Cross-Candles, Genital Candles, and Skull-Candles to name a few.
Figure candles add an extra dimension to candle-burning due to the sympathetic qualities their specific shape provides. In and of themselves, figure-candles are no more powerful than regular candles. However, some practitioners may find that they react more strongly to the visual/tactile aspects of the candle which allows them to be more successful in their endeavors.
Some Types of Figure Candles and their Use(s)

Image result for figure candlesHuman Figure Candles- These are candles which have been molded in the shape of a naked Man (Adam-Candle) and a naked woman (Eve-Candle). Human Figure Candles are often used to represent a specific person. They come in various colors including black, white, green, and red. Just as in general candle-burning practices, the color of the candle should be in harmony with the goal of your spell. Typically, the name of the person the candle is intended to represent is scratched across the chest of the doll. The individual’s personal concerns, when available, are ‘loaded’ into the base of the candle. Once prepared the candle may be burned, either alone or with other candles. In some cases it may be manipulated as part of a “moving candle spell”, that is it may be moved towards/away from another candle(s) or object to symbolize movement on the issue or problem with the ultimate goal to bring about a certain condition. A good example of one such spell is placing two prepared Red Human Figure candles on an altar facing towards one another about a foot apart with a red taper in the center. Each day the candles are lit and move closer together in order to bring the two people together. In some cases, the Human Figure candle isn’t burned at all. Many practitioners often prepare the candle as described above and then use it in the same manner as a doll-baby.
Image result for figure candlesSkull Candles-
Skull Candles are shaped like the human skull and come in black, green, red and white. Because they are associated with the human head/mind they are used to penetrate another’s thoughts. However, due to many people associating skeletons with sickness and death, I have seen some practitioners use these candles to bring health to the sick or to curse their enemies with sickness unto death.

Image result for figure candlesCross Candles- Alternately called Cross of Calvary Candles or the Floral Cross, these candles are shaped like the Holy Cross and are further embossed with a set of crossed-keys and an open bible. Cross candles come in an array of colors whose use follow the same line of color symbolism in practical candle-burning spells. However, due to their association with Christianity, they are often used in conjunction with praying the Psalms for specific goals. I have also seen them used in workings to open or close doors (physical or spiritual).

Image result for figure candlesLovers Candle- These are candles which resemble a nude heterosexual couple embracing and are used to enhance the romantic/sexual aspects of one’s relationship.

Related imageCat Candle- A candle molded in the shape of a cat sitting on its hind legs. These candles come in red, green and black. Due to the cat’s perceived ability to always land on its feet, to slip in and out of placed undetected, and longevity cat candles are used to draw in good luck. The type of luck desired is often represented by the color of candle chosen and the petition placed under the candle.

Genital Candle- Candles which are representative of the Penis and Vagina. These candles are used to manipulate/enhance/control one’s sexual prowess and nature. Perhaps the most common use for these candles are to attract a new sexual partner, arouse passion, ensure sexual fidelity, and curse another individual’s sexuality.

Image result for figure candlesPyramid Candle- A large candle molded in green wax in the shape of a Pyramid with an eye in its center. This candle is a three-dimensional representation of the pyramid found on United States Currency and is associated with the wealth of Egypt. It is thought to quickly draw money and prosperity to the individual when properly prepared and burned with sincere prayer.

Mummy Candles- These candles are shaped like an Egyptian Mummy and come in either black or red wax. Due to the binding nature of the mummy, they are often used to bind enemies or keep them down. However, they are also used to lift cross conditions and empower the individual.

Image result for praying hands candlesPraying Hands- Candles which resemble hands brought together in prayer. Praying Hands candles are available only in white and are used when praying for the sick or injured.

Image result for witch candlesWitch Candle- These are candles molded in the likeness of a stereotypical witch complete with conical-hat and broom. They draw upon the belief that witches are naturally attuned to magic and can command powerful forces. They are typically available in either black or red wax and are used to cast hexes (black) or bring about love (red). I have also seen these candles used by magical practitioners against other magical practitioners for both good and ill.

Image result for figure candlesDevil Candle- Candles molded in the likeness of a devil, they come in red, green, and black wax. This devil is not the Satan of Christianity but rather an amalgam of Pagan/African/Christianity deities into a powerful ally in magic. Depending on the color, these candles are used to incite passion in another, bring in money, or hex your enemy.

Related image7 Knob Candle- These are candles which have been created to have seven knobs and come in white, red, green and black. Their color symbolism follows the same general concepts as found in practical candle-burning spells. Seven Knob candles are used to bring about one’s wishes by carving one’s wish on each of the seven knobs, anointing each know with oil, and then burning one knob per day for a total of seven days.

Image result for mariage candlesIf you are conducting a marriage spell and incorporating a Marriage Candle into the ritual, observe which figure – the bride or groom – burns more quickly. It can be said that this partner is the more eager of the two to get married and may dominate the other after the marriage ceremony has been performed.

Novena or glass candles are often used in Hoodoo spellwork.
