Color and crystals
Crystals – In science, a crystal is a solid substance in which the atoms, molecules, or ions are arranged in an orderly repeating pattern extending in all three spatial dimensions. The word crystal is a loan from the ancient Greek word (krustallos), which had the same meaning, but according to the ancient understanding of crystal. At root it means anything congealed by freezing, such as ice. The word once referred particularly to quartz, or “rock crystal”.Crystals can be very powerful and are very sensitive. Crystals, like all things, have an energy field – aura – and their different energies can be used to balance/enhance our own body’s energies. As with many natural therapies, crystals have been used as a healing aid for centuries., but included here, are some suggestions of crystals which may be helpful in relation to the seven main chakras and their colours.A mineral is “naturally occurring homogeneous solid with a definite chemical composition and a highly ordered atomic arrangement” (Encyclopedia Britanica). They are usually formed from inorganic processes and make up the crystals, rocks and gemstones of the world. There must also be a definite crystalline structure to the atomic arrangement, color and hardness. However, these may vary greatly, especial color, not only from one specimen to another but within the same specimen. Each mineral has a specific hardness.
Crystals and semi-precious gemstones come from one unified source – Mother Earth. Created from the magma or Earth’s inner core, healing stones have gone through a geologic process of heating, cooling and displacement on their way to their present form.Crystals are part of the earth itself and of nature. They are comprised of quartz and silica, which are also a major component of the human body. Like colour, crystals also emit a vibrational frequency, which matches the electromagnetic field of both the earth and its human occupants. The most widely used crystal today is clear quartz and it can be found powering watches, computers and radios to name a few.
Gemstones come in multiple forms and colors. Their different colors resonate with the body’s energy system and although their energetic effect is more diffuse than crystals, they are extremely useful for harmonizing an environment or wearing on your person as jewelry. As with color and crystals, gemstones also provide a symbolic and energetic connection to nature. The energy field of different gemstones is influenced by geometrical form, color and subtle vibration. Each stone is made up of minute crystals which are in constant motion thus emitting an energy signature or frequency.
A crystal is “a three-dimensional atomic, ionic, or molecular structure consisting of periodically repeated, identically constituted, congruent unit cells” (Readers Digest, Great Illustrated Dictionary). These three dimensional, atomic, ionic, or molecular structures (OK lets call them crystals!) have been used and revered since the dawn of mankind. The Bible refers to them over 200 times. Crystals and artifacts made from crystals have been found in the ruins of Babylon, Pyramids of Ancient Egypt, tombs of Ancient Chinese Emperors and Toltec, Mayan, Aztec and Inca sites in South America.
Crystals have both piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties. Piezoelectricity is where electricity is produced by pressure. Many early cultures (e.g. Mayan, Aztec, Native American Indian, African and Celtic) used to strike quartz crystals with a wooden mallet, resulting in a flash of light. Imagine the scene around a fire in the darkness of night, the shaman/medicine man calls on the spirits/gods and light flashes around the scene! Compression releases electrons from their atomic bonding – flash of light – they then return to the atomic nuclei. These electrons are continuously vibrating and almost any energy source placed near a crystal will cause an increase in this vibration. It is not uncommon for personal crystals to fracture or shatter during use. Pyroelectricity is produced by heat. Simply holding a crystal in your hand gives enough heat to generate the pyroelectric effect. Quartz crystal will focus any type of energy. You can see this for yourself if you hold a quartz crystal over the palm of your hand and rotate it slowly in a clockwise direction. You will see a point of light moving around your hand, under the crystal, as it focuses the light in the room (or sunlight).
Crystals grow (literally) out of a chaotic mineral environment. They bring the environment around them into balance. This is how crystals work in healing. They bring you/your cells to balance. There are only two things that can go wrong with the human body. Either something external coming in from the outside such as a bacterium, virus, toxin, allergen etc., or something creating an internal change such as emotions, thought patterns, mental processes etc.
With an external factor, for example a bacterial infection, one bacterial cell infects one cell in your body. This process happens hundreds or thousand of times every day. Usually your cell recognizes the invader and destroys it and/or eliminates it from itself. Sometimes the bacterium starts to multiply and begins to take over the functioning of your cell. More and more bacteria are reproduced until your cell is ready to burst. Then there is a change in the electrical potential of the cell membrane and the cell bursts releasing thousands of bacteria to infect other cells in your body.
A crystal (the correct one in each specific instance) will balance the electrical potential of your cell membrane and the cell itself. Your cell will “think” it is normal and act so. Its normal action would be to destroy and eliminate the foreign bacterial cells causing the infection. In the second instance crystals balance the electrical potential of cells governing your emotional and mental processes, bringing these to balance. Crystals cannot harm (unless dropped from a significant height!) as they simply balance. That is not to say that some people do not feel energy shifts whilst working with crystals.
The point of balance must first be found and like a scale finding its balance point some up and down movements are often experienced prior to equilibrium.
Crystals amplify, focus, store, transmit, transmute (change from one type to another), hold and channel energy. Energy being a universal force which cannot be created or destroyed and is not inherently either positive or negative, good or evil or anything else. Energy is simply energy or the Universal Life Force. It may change, or be changed, from one type to another, for example, electrical to light.
Crystals can be carried or worn. They may be placed in your surroundings, in homes, offices, workplaces, recreational areas and goldfish bowls. They have been known to reduce the harmful effects of radiation from microwaves, mobile telephones, television and computer screens. They can calm the energies in a room making your environment feel more relaxed, or energised. They can increase your focus and boost creativity. In fact, I cannot think of anything that crystals cannot help with.
Most metals encountered in everyday life are polycrystals. Crystals are often symmetrically intergrown to form crystal twins. They vibrate to different frequencies depending on the crystal, its size and use. People are guided to a specific crystal, determined by the matrix of the person at a given time, and that of the crystal chosen. You touch it, and know it is yours – you are attuned to that crystal at that point in time. Crystals can be placed anywhere, held, or worn as jewelry. They know what they have to do.Crystal colors have different meanings and powers. Throughout time, both legends and mythology have connected crystals with power, health, wealth, and both positive and negative energy. Even lead crystal healing is widely used and proclaimed by many health specialists.
Gemstones – A gemstone or gem, also called a precious or semi-precious stone, is a piece of attractive mineral, which – when cut and polished – is used to make jewelry or other adornments. However certain rocks, (such as lapis-lazuli) and organic materials (such as amber or jet) are not minerals, but are still used for jewelry and gemstone rings, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well. Most gemstones are hard, but some soft minerals are used in jewelry because of their lustre or other physical properties that have aesthetic value. Rarity is another characteristic that lends value to a gemstone .
Stones and crystals are often chosen by color for specific purposes in fact, for many crystal healing systems color is a primary mode of organization and guide to the properties and functions of the stones in treatment.
The entire spectrum of colour can be seen in the world around us and has the power to influence us in multiple ways. Colour has a holistic effect on the body, mind, emotions and spirit. Each of the colours’ strengths and healing properties are enhanced and amplified by the power of the gemstone, crystal or symbol. On a physical level colour is absorbed through the optic nerves of the eyes and through the skin. On a psychic or energetic level colour is absorbed into the human energy field through the aura and the chakra system.
All living things on the planet require sunlight to grow and survive and humans are no exception. Within the pure light of the sun are the seven colors of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Each color emits a different wave length and energy frequency. These energetic frequencies range from red – the lowest vibration (longest wavelength) to violet the highest frequency (shortest wavelength). These different color frequencies affect the well being of the spirit, mind and emotions.
You can use color as a rough guideline to the use of a crystal. The realization that color has influence over the human mind is as old as recorded history. What is difficult is to separate out the fact from the fiction. Colors have many meanings to people mostly based on their culture and religion. But the natural crystals and minerals have no culture and no religion. They are a part of the Earth. Their color influence rays stay the same.We see “red” when angry, and red inspires us to action. We are “blue” when sad. Yellow warms us. Green slows us down both mentally and physically. The fundamental meanings of colors have been present in the wisdom of all cultures, but somewhat confusing and occasionally misinterpreted. But with the research of today’s practitioners of biology, biochemistry, and physics, we can sort truth from fiction.Based on extensive research in both the history and tradition of talismans and the more modern human psychological studies of the fundamental effects of color on human bodies and minds, we now know the real, natural effects of gemstone, crystal and mineral color influence rays.
The area of color healing and other healing and work with colored stones and crystals is a vast area of study. Color is not the only factor or guide to the function of the crystal in healing and other work but it is one of the most obvious guides to use and organization of your crystal companions.
Color vibration creates a clear and direct resonance effect on the energy body and the mind, body and spirit. Much of our response to color is built into our genetic and spiritual blueprint. While cultural interpretations and beliefs about color can vary greatly from place to place and time to time there are many aspects that appear to be almost universal.
We have touched on colors in some other sections of the workshop including those on the chakras and the aura but have not gone into much depth. Therefore, it’s best to choose the crystal(s) that will best reflect your feelings, actions, thoughts, vibrations, and healing. It’s the crystal’s color that provides the most meaning to you and that appeals to you the most. While looking at the crystal color or holding that crystal in your hand, you may feel a sense of warmth, or even hot or cold feelings. Whichever crystal color(s) feels right to you is the crystal(s) for you. It could be one crystal color or a mixture of colors.Physical color in the environment effects our moods, relationships, and well-being have a huge but often largely subconscious effect on your moods, actions, and mental emotional states of being and function. Our reactions to colors are led by a combination of biological, physiological, psychological, social and cultural factors.
Colors often have different symbolic meanings in different cultures. For example, white is the color for weddings in western societies and is for funerals in traditional Chinese culture; red is associated with anger in America but with happiness in China.
Marketing experts, psychologists, advertisers and designers have long used color, to affect us directly .The color in our surroundings has amazing power to affect our moods and decisions. We can use color as a tool to create wellness and contentment, to incite passion or anger, to calm and soothe, to express frivolity or seriousness. As a tool for healing, color can be gazed at, beamed as healing light, meditated on, bathed in, worn, and used in art and in ritual such as candle magic and mandala work and painting. Spiritual light and color is used for healing the aura. And the physical body for deepening meditation and to promote specific effects in the energy field. There are many systems of color healing color is of itself a vital for healing the aura, the physical body and for deepening meditation and to promote specific effects in the energy field.
Color is a visual representation what we are able to visually perceive of electro-magnetic frequency (light). We cannot see all light on the electro-magnetic spectrum. We’re only able to see a very narrow band on that spectrum. And we call that band visible light.
Colored light is beamed through crystals using a light box or light can be visualized and sent by intention amplified by crystals.Colors can be run as shakti energies.Sitting under colored light or shinning colored light on the skin is called Chroma therapy.Color healing is a vast area of study with many different theories and practices.
Orange – friendliness, happiness, pleasure, family togetherness: Use to find new friends, bring people and family together, and to take away fear, low self-esteem, or insecurity.
Yellow – warmth, clarity, optimism, mental growth, concentration, focus: Use yellow crystal when you are unclear about your direction in life and to feel more optimistic about someone or something.
Green – Nature, balance, healing, renewal, good health, success, luck: Use to give you strength and to help you succeed at anything.
Blue – trust, faith, peace, patience, honor: Use if you need to develop trust or want others to trust you. Use to forgive and be forgiven. Use to relax or relieve nervousness.
Purple – creativity, wisdom, self-knowledge, intuition: Use to enlighten your spirit and decrease boredom. Use to gain deep insight into anything or anyone, including yourself.
Pink – new love, new romance, and pain release: Use when you want to send love to someone new, to attract a new love, or to heal a broken heart.
Red – energy, strong love, true love, passion, courage: Use to show strong, deep feelings of love, to overcome depression, to relieve feelings of weakness or fear.
Black – protection, power, security. Black is the most powerful color as it contains all the colors within: Use to help you see all possibilities, to relieve fear, to feel safe and secure.
White / Clear – cleanliness, purity, unity, innocence: Use to establish trust in the universe, to guide you when you don’t know where you’re going, to guide you to knowledge or understanding, especially of the spiritual world.
Rainbows symbolize an arc of energy with the divine. Each light catcher contains a Swarovski prism made of refined lead crystal, which refracts the sunlight into the seven colors of the rainbow which also correlates to the seven traditional colors of the chakras.
In the physical plane color is the result of light hitting an object. The color we see is the frequency of light that is reflected off an object as light strikes it .Colors that we are able to see form the visible spectrum .The easiest way to become aware of the full spectrum in pure colored light is to take an old cd and hold it in light while watching the play of rainbow color across it rainbows are, of course a full spectrum and have the range of secondary and tertiary colors as well as the primary colors. Colors react with each other either by harmonizing or contrasting with each other. The color wheel is a valuable tool for understanding color. A color wheel is an image of the spectrum bent into a circle.
The colors adjacent to each other on the color wheel form a related harmonious sequence. When you are mixing colors of paint or pigments. the Primary colors are Red , Yellow and Blue red and yellow make orange and they are equidistant on the color wheel When you are working with light the Primary colors are magenta , cyan and blue your computer screen is colored by light rather than with pigment and the green (as a primary) is a much lighter yellow green than the emerald or grass green hue often used as the secondary color in pigment based color charts.
Primary means that in theory you can mix all other colors from them though it is not as simple as it sounds because pure red, blue, and yellow do not exist in pigments. You cannot mix the primary colors from any other colors.
Orange, green and violet are secondary colors and are made by mixing equal parts of two primary colors.
Yellow and blue make green, blue and red make violet, red and yellow make orange.
The tertiary colors are mixed from equal parts of a primary and the secondary color next to it on the color wheel. yellow- green, blue- green, blue- violet, red- violet ,red- orange, yellow -orange, are the tertiary colors White things reflect all frequencies of light black things absorb all frequencies of light.
Complimentary colors are those opposite each other on the color wheel and they intensify each other when placed next to each other. They can be mixed together to form a neutral gray and when you view a photographic negative you will see the complimentary color of the positive photo image. The complimentary colors of the pigment primaries are Red compliment = Green Blue compliment = Orange
Yellow compliment = Violet.
All colors, including browns, grays, and neutral colors are mixed from combinations of
primary and secondary colors.
Hue is another word for color it is used to describe close or similar colors, scarlet and crimson are both hues of red for example. Intensity, Chroma and saturation all refer to how bright a color is. Vivid bright colors have strong intensity; pale grayed colors are weak in intensity, adding white to strong red creates weak pink, graying a hue by adding the complimentary color also weakens it. Tone refers to the relative lightness or darkness of a color. When
white is added to a color the result is a tint of the color. Pink is a tint of red adding black to a color results in a shade of the color.
Certain color effects seem universal, such as that of “warm” and “cool” colors.
Warm colors generally include magenta, red, orange, yellow, and yellow green. They speed up our perception of time and produce feelings that are warm, cozy, and inviting. Warm colors tend to make things look near these colors are associated with excitement, happiness and comfort.
Cool Colors generally include violet, blue, light blue, cyan and
sea green. Emotions associated with these colors range from calm and peace to sadness, withdrawal and repression, cool colors create distance… Red, orange, and yellow (in ascending order) will elevate pulse, blood pressure, and incite arousal; even stimulate appetite. Blues and blue greens will calm and suppress the appetite, and lend a feeling of peace. Though the exact degree to which you feel these emotions will depend on you.One of the most common ways for choosing crystals is with the common chakra color associations here is a brief list of the most common associations with a few stones.
Each Chakra also has healing crystals and gemstones of co-ordinates Chakra colors, which can be used in crystal healing. Chakra color healing has a profound effect physically, emotionally and spiritually; if our Chakras are blocked or drained, then our body, spirit and mind can not function properly. Clearing and balancing our Chakras with Chakra colors, crystals and Chakra sounds, breath and positive affirmation can easily and effectively, bring us back into a vibrant and healthy balance.
First chakra root– Root Chakras color is red, other colors associated with the Root Chakra are black brown, and gray. Red and or black. Physical and survival issues – might be garnet or ruby or red jasper and or black hematite and obsidian which are beneficial.
